The Orivana bridgeHow it’s made

Want to see where your crunch comes from?

Most snack brands don’t own a factory. They send a recipe to someone who also makes eleven other people’s snacks, and hope for the best.

We’re made by Orivana Organics — our parent company, and a food manufacturer in its own right, with a continuous full line. It’s a real place. You can walk through it.

  1. SelectGrade AAA kernels, moisture-checked
  2. Roast195°C continuous hot-air roast
  3. SeasonWet coat, then dry seasoning
  4. SealNitrogen-flushed, sealed in minutes

Ask us the awkward ones.

Every answer here is direct, because it’s easier to show you the science than give you marketing speak.

  1. Neutral

on its own — on purpose

On its own, honestly — it's neutral. Mildly nutty, slightly sweet, and mostly a texture. That neutrality is exactly why it works: it's an unusually good carrier for seasoning, because it doesn't fight the flavour you put on it. What makes a makhana snack taste like nothing isn't the makhana. It's what was, or wasn't, done to it afterward.

  2. 2 stages

    wet coat, then dry spice

In two stages. While the roasted makhana is still warm, a slurry system sprays a fine liquid coat across it. Then dry seasoning goes on in the tumbler and bonds to that coat. If you skip the wet stage, the dry powder has nothing to hold onto and it separates on the way to you. That's the reason some packs arrive with all the flavour in the corner.

  3. 2–3%

    moisture after roasting

Crunch is a moisture number. Raw makhana carries roughly 11–18% internal moisture; controlled roasting takes that down to around 2–3%, which is where the structure becomes brittle. Then the product is cooled immediately, because if you pack it warm it sweats inside the pouch and softens itself. After that, it's the barrier film and the nitrogen doing the work.

  4. 100%

    of ingredients declared

Every ingredient in every SKU is declared in full, broken out, in plain words. No "spices," no "natural flavours," no second page. You can open any product's Ingredient X-Ray and click each one to find out what it is and why it's there. If we ever couldn't break something out, we'd tell you that too.

  5. 1 profile

    continuous line, not batches

On an automated continuous high capacity roaster, not in batches. That distinction matters more than it sounds: batch roasting means every batch is a slightly different judgement call, and you taste that inconsistency. A continuous line holds one profile, so pack number ten behaves like pack number one.

  6. N₂

    nitrogen-flushed pouch

In-house high-efficiency weighing & filling — accurate declared fill weights at commercial speed, with nitrogen flushing for product protection. Designed for pouch, jar, bulk, and custom retail formats, without compromising line efficiency.

  7. 9 months

    unopened, stored cool & dry

9 months from manufacture, unopened, stored cool and dry — the date is printed on every pack. After opening, that protection is gone: reseal it tightly and finish it within 7 days. Makhana is hygroscopic, meaning it actively pulls moisture from the air, so an open pack in a humid kitchen softens faster than you'd expect.

  8. Kolkata

    Orivana Organics' own facility

At Orivana Organics' own facility in Kolkata, India. Not job-worked out to a third party. You can walk the line yourself in the factory journey. The facility holds food safety certifications, and certificates are available on request.

  9. 0 claims

about what it does to your body

Here's the honest version. It's roasted rather than fried, the ingredient list is short and fully declared, and the nutrition panel is on every product page — go and read it. What we won't do is tell you what it will do for your body, because that's a claim, and claims are exactly what we built this brand to argue with. Eat it because it's good.

  10. 1 line

    doing six jobs

Fair question. Loose makhana is raw material. What you're paying for here is the roast profile, the two-stage seasoning, the barrier packaging, the nitrogen flush, the shelf-life testing and the fact that all of it happens on one controlled line. Some of that you can taste immediately. Some of it you'd only notice if it were missing — which is usually when people notice it.

The boring bits, done properly.
